DAFA designed a modestly affordable sized home with modern sensibilities and the best of water views. Located in West Palm Beach, FL, the house presents a mysterious, monolithic facade to the street, while opening up completely on the opposite, Intracoastal Waterway-facing frontage. Arriving at the house from the street, a second-floor window peers above a grove of seagrape trees.

The house is never more than one room deep, with every room given a spectacular view of the water through floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Every room also has direct access to the outside, via the patio on the first floor or the long veranda on the second, accessed by a long staircase, giving each bedroom its own entrance. The intention was to build a democratic house, preserving each family member’s privacy, while materials were kept honest, bare, and streamlined, yet earthy. Superficial, decorative cladding was avoided, and form followed function whenever possible.
